I like motor sports of just about all types, specifically auto racing. In a prior life before beginning this blog I had a weekly motor sports column in a local newspaper. It was a gig that gave me the perfect excuse to watch NASCAR every weekend and attend races all in the name of research for my writing, at least that’s what I told everyone.
One of the great elements of auto racing is the concept of drafting. At such high racing speeds two or more cars racing together in single file one behind the others can run faster than a lone car out by itself. At some racetracks having a dependable drafting partner is the difference between a strong finish or being left literally at the back of the pack.
The same is true for us as Christians in our spiritual race. Having dependable and constant drafting partners running with us can make all the difference. They can literally push us forward in times when if we tried it alone we would quickly find ourselves overwhelmed and loosing ground.
“By yourself you’re unprotected. With a friend you can face the worst. Can you round up a third? A three-stranded rope isn’t easily snapped” Ecclesiastes 4:12 (The Message)
Sadly far too many of us try to go it alone when it comes to our daily spiritual walk. We don’t have someone who we can travel our faith journey with. Someone who will at times be that force to come behind us and say “I’ve got your spiritual back” and help us push forward. Be it as a prayer warrior, accountability partner, or simply someone to speak words of faith and encouragement into our lives we all need someone in our corner cheering us on.
Many of us are involved in small group studies or community groups which are wonderful and have a much-needed and vital role to fill, but I am talking about direct one-on-one partnerships between Christians to link together and commit to supporting each other in their spiritual development and growth.
I think the Church is missing a giant opportunity by not actively seeking to connect and engage people in spiritual partnerships. Let me make myself clear, these are not just spiritual friendships, these are no holes barred air your dirty laundry with each other and be brutally honest about your spiritual needs and dreams and working together to move forward. These are friends in the truest and most biblical sense of the word.
“Since we are surrounded by so many examples of faith, we must get rid of everything that slows us down, especially sin that distracts us. We must run the race that lies ahead of us and never give up” Hebrews 12:1 (GOD’S WORD Translation)
If your blessed with already having a drafting partner be thankful and praise for what you have and commit to grow your friendship even deeper. If you do not have someone currently who you can draft with look around and find someone you can talk too about forming a drafting partnership. Chances are they are looking too.
